Acupuncture

COMING SOON

Acupuncture is a safe, natural, and evidence-based treatment that can support your recovery before, during, and after cancer care.

Whether you're dealing with chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, post-surgical pain, radiation side effects, hot flashes or general fatigue, acupuncture can help ease your symptoms and improve your overall sense of well-being.

At Ottawa Cancer and Lymphatics Centre, acupuncture is offered by regulated health professionals with specialized training in cancer rehab and lymphatic care. Every treatment is individualized, and always delivered with a focus on safety, comfort, and collaboration with your care team.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a therapeutic technique rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that involves inserting very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body. These points help regulate the nervous system, improve circulation, and restore balance—encouraging the body’s natural healing processes.

Modern research supports the use of acupuncture as a complementary therapy in cancer care. It is particularly helpful for managing side effects like nausea, pain, hot flashes, anxiety, sleep disruption, and peripheral neuropathy. It is also increasingly used for swelling, post-surgical recovery, and energy restoration.

Acupuncture can be a powerful tool for those undergoing active treatment or adjusting to life in recovery. We commonly use acupuncture to address:

  • Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy: Acupuncture can help reduce tingling, burning, and numbness in the hands and feet caused by chemotherapy.
  • Nausea and Digestive Changes: Often used alongside oncology treatments to ease nausea, bloating, constipation, or appetite loss.
  • Pain and Tension: Whether from surgery, scar tissue, or inflammation, acupuncture can help reduce discomfort and improve range of motion.
  • Fatigue and Low Energy: By regulating the nervous system and improving circulation, acupuncture often leads to deeper rest and improved vitality.
  • Lymphedema and Swelling: When used in combination with lymphatic drainage and compression therapy, acupuncture can support fluid movement and symptom relief.
  • Emotional Wellbeing: Acupuncture has been shown to lower stress and anxiety, improve sleep, and support mental clarity and mood—essential in recovery.

What to Expect

Your first appointment will include a full assessment where we review your medical history, current symptoms, and goals for treatment. You’ll receive a personalized care plan that may include acupuncture alone or in combination with other services such as physiotherapy, manual lymphatic drainage, dietetic counselling or fitness support.

Treatments are gentle and relaxing. Many patients find they feel calmer, more rested, and more balanced after just a few sessions. Frequency of treatment will depend on your needs and stage of recovery.

We welcome patients at all stages of care—whether you're newly diagnosed, undergoing treatment, or years into survivorship.

Acupuncture at Ottawa Cancer & Lymphatics Centre is integrated into our full spectrum of cancer rehabilitation services. You’ll be treated by clinicians who understand the unique needs of those navigating cancer, lymphedema, post-surgical healing, or long-term effects of treatment.

We collaborate across disciplines to ensure your care is safe, effective, and personalized. Acupuncture is also available as a standalone service and can complement the care you’re receiving from your oncology team.
