Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy Treatment
At Ottawa Cancer and Lymphatics Centre, we understand how challenging chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) can be. Tingling, numbness, burning, and weakness in the hands and feet can interfere with everyday activities, mobility, and emotional wellbeing. Our team is here to support you with compassionate, personalized care designed to help improve nerve health, restore function, and enhance quality of life.
What Is Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy?
CIPN is a common side effect of certain chemotherapy drugs that damage the peripheral nerves—those located outside the brain and spinal cord. Chemotherapy agents more likely to cause neuropathy include taxanes, platinum-based drugs, and alkaloid drugs.
Common symptoms include:
- Numbness, tingling, or burning in the hands or feet
- Muscle weakness or cramping
- Difficulty with balance, walking, or coordination
- Fine motor challenges (e.g., buttoning clothes, tying shoes)
- Heightened sensitivity to temperature or touch
Symptoms often begin symmetrically in the fingers and toes and may progress toward the center of the body (glove and stocking pattern). In rare cases, CIPN may cause more serious effects such as changes in heart rate, difficulty breathing, or organ dysfunction.
Symptoms can begin during treatment or appear up to months afterward. Risk factors include chemotherapy dosage, number of cycles, age, diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, and pre-existing nerve conditions. Early intervention can reduce the severity, prevent progression, and improve overall function.
Rehabilitation Services
Our experienced team works collaboratively to provide evidence-based, whole-person support for people living with CIPN. We design personalized treatment plans focused on reducing symptoms, restoring function, and supporting your independence and confidence.
- Physiotherapy: We use targeted exercises to rebuild strength, improve balance, and enhance mobility. Techniques include gait training, sensory stimulation, and neuromuscular re-education to reduce fall risk and improve daily function.
- Massage Therapy: Gentle therapeutic massage can reduce pain, enhance circulation, and release tension caused by neuropathic changes. Our massage therapists adapt every session to your needs and comfort.
- Kinesiology: Our kinesiologists provide customized movement programs to help restore strength, body awareness, and coordination. Whether you're looking to improve fine motor skills or full-body function, we'll guide you safely through your recovery.
- Laser Therapy: Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is a non-invasive modality that may help reduce inflammation, stimulate nerve regeneration, and ease neuropathic discomfort. It is a key part of our integrative approach to managing CIPN.
- Compression Therapy: If swelling accompanies your neuropathy, we may recommend compression garments or bandaging to promote healthy circulation and fluid movement.
- Psychotherapy: Coping with chronic symptoms can affect your emotional health. Our trauma-informed psychotherapists provide supportive care to help you manage anxiety, frustration, and body image changes related to neuropathy.
- Dietetics: Nutrition plays a vital role in supporting nerve health. Our registered dietitian offers guidance on reducing inflammation and addressing nutrient deficiencies that may worsen symptoms.
- Acupuncture (Coming soon!): Acupuncture may assist in regulating the nervous system, improving circulation, and reducing pain and sensory disturbances related to CIPN.
With the right support, it’s possible to feel more in control, more connected to your body, and more like yourself again. We're here to help you every step of the way.
