Lymphatic Drainage Massage
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, hands-on therapy technique that supports your lymphatic system — the part of your body responsible for fluid balance, immune function, and waste removal.
It is a highly specialized type of massage that uses slow, rhythmic movements to stimulate the flow of lymph fluid. Unlike traditional massage, MLD is designed to work directly on the lymphatic vessels just beneath the skin. It is light, precise, and deeply calming — and when performed by a trained professional, it can help reduce swelling and improve your body’s healing response. Whether you are recovering from cancer treatment, managing lymphedema or lipedema, healing after plastic surgery, or simply looking to reduce swelling and improve circulation, MLD can be an essential part of your recovery and maintenance plan.
At Ottawa Cancer and Lymphatics Centre, we specialize in oncology and lymphedema-focused MLD treatments. Lymphatic massage is often one part of a larger comprehensive care plan that is tailored to your individual needs. All treatments are one-on-one and completed by certified lymphedema therapists with advanced training in cancer care, post-surgical recovery, and chronic swelling conditions.
Lymphatic Massage for Cancer Diagnoses
Cancer treatments such as surgery, radiation, and lymph node removal can disrupt lymphatic flow and increase the risk of secondary lymphedema — a chronic condition that causes swelling, discomfort, and heaviness in the limbs or other parts of the body.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage helps by:
- Reducing swelling and fluid buildup
- Stimulating lymph flow in affected or at-risk areas
- Softening fibrotic (hardened) tissue caused by radiation or longstanding lymphedema
- Supporting immune function and tissue healing
- Managing early signs of swelling to prevent long-term progression
We regularly support patients recovering from breast, gynecologic, prostate, head and neck, abdominal, thoracic, melanoma, and urogenital cancers, who have or may be at risk for lymphedema. MLD is also used proactively after cancer surgery to encourage lymphatic recovery and reduce post-operative swelling, particularly after procedures like mastectomy, lymph node dissection, DIEP or TRAM flap reconstruction, and pelvic surgeries.
Lymphatic Massage for Plastic Surgery Procedures
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is widely recommended after cosmetic and reconstructive surgery to:
- Minimize post-surgical swelling and bruising
- Accelerate healing and reduce discomfort
- Prevent fluid buildup or seroma formation
- Improve skin texture and contour during the recovery phase
- Support scar healing and tissue flexibility
MLD is commonly used after liposuction, tummy tucks, facelifts, lower body lifts, breast augmentations/reductions, and body contouring procedures. Although early intervention may be recommended for some procedures, it is more common to begin MLD 7–10 days after surgery, depending on your surgeon’s recommendations.
All treatments at our clinic are tailored to your comfort and surgical protocol, and provided in a safe, private, and trauma-informed environment. Our therapists are well equipped to keep you comfortable and can adjust treatment positioning based on your post-operative needs.

Lymphatic Massage for Lipedema and Chronic Swelling Conditions
Manual Lymphatic Drainage can also be indicated to support people with lipedema, chronic venous insufficiency, post-traumatic swelling, or general inflammatory conditions that affect fluid movement. While MLD cannot reverse lipedema, it can provide relief from pain, heaviness, and pressure while improving lymph flow in affected tissues.
Regular MLD treatments can:
- Reduce discomfort and aching in the legs or arms
- Support mobility and energy levels
- Complement compression therapy and exercise routines
- Help stabilize symptoms between flare-ups
Many people seek Manual Lymphatic Drainage for general immune support, detoxification, or to reduce fluid retention due to stress, hormones, or lifestyle. While not a cure-all, MLD can be a deeply relaxing, restorative treatment that promotes circulation, reduces puffiness, and enhances overall body comfort. It can be especially helpful during seasonal transitions, post-travel, or after illness.
What to Expect
A typical MLD session is 45–60 minutes and takes place in a quiet, private treatment room. Your therapist will use very light, rhythmic hand movements focused on lymph node areas and drainage pathways specific to your needs. There is no deep pressure or oil used.
Depending on your condition and goals, your therapist may:
- Review swelling patterns or take baseline limb measurements
- Incorporate gentle abdominal breathing techniques or compression prescription and education
- Coordinate your treatment plan with other health care professionals including nutritional guidance, mental health support, and prescribed fitness
- Recommend an MLD series (weekly or bi-weekly) for best outcomes
MLD is covered under most extended health benefits under physiotherapy or massage therapy, depending on the provider. If you’re unsure where to start, get in touch and we’ll help you determine what’s right for you.
Whether you are newly diagnosed, in active treatment, recovering from surgery, or years into survivorship — MLD can help support healing and comfort at every stage.
