Chemotherapy

Cancer rehab during and after chemotherapy treatment can be incredibly beneficial to help manage and mitigate your symptoms.

Chemotherapy is often an integral and very powerful part of cancer treatment, but its effects can extend well beyond the end of your treatment. Many people experience fatigue, nerve pain, weakness, brain fog, emotional overwhelm, or swelling during and after chemotherapy. At Ottawa Cancer and Lymphatics Centre, we provide supportive rehab services designed to help you cope with these side effects and improve your quality of life—before, during, and after treatment.

Whether you're navigating active treatment or adjusting to life after chemo, our team is here to support your healing with a whole-person approach that respects where you’re at and helps you move forward with confidence.

The physical and emotional effects of chemotherapy are wide-ranging and deeply personal. Some of the most common issues we support include:

  • Fatigue and deconditioning
  • Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN)
  • Swelling
  • Nausea, appetite loss, or weight changes
  • Brain fog and memory issues
  • Pelvic or sexual dysfunction
  • Anxiety, depression, and stress-related symptoms
  • Changes in digestion, hydration, or bowel health

Rehab During Chemotherapy

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to wait until chemotherapy is finished to begin rehab. In fact, early rehabilitation—also known as “prehab” or concurrent rehab—can improve treatment tolerance, reduce complications, and make recovery easier later.

Our therapists work closely with you to create a care plan that matches your energy levels and treatment schedule. Simple, lymphatic-safe movement can help preserve strength, prevent stiffness, and support your immune system. Gentle physiotherapy can reduce fatigue and improve circulation. Dietitian support may ease nausea or appetite changes, while psychotherapy offers a space to process the mental and emotional challenges of treatment. All care is tailored and flexible, and we offer both in-person and virtual options to suit your needs on any given day.

Recovery After Chemotherapy

Many people expect to feel “normal” as soon as chemotherapy ends, but lingering side effects like fatigue, brain fog, numbness, and sleep disturbances are extremely common. You may find yourself dealing with unexpected challenges related to movement, mood, memory, or even your relationship with your body.

Our post-chemo rehab treatments are designed to help you rebuild gently and intentionally. Physiotherapy and fitness services help restore strength, balance, and confidence. Massage therapy and laser therapy can relieve pain and support nerve recovery. Our dietitian can help you navigate nutrition and energy needs as your body heals, while psychotherapy can support mental health, body image, or sexual wellness concerns. We’ll work with you to find the right pace and plan, so your recovery feels manageable—not overwhelming.

At Ottawa Cancer and Lymphatics Centre, we believe that recovery isn’t just about getting through treatment—it’s about restoring your quality of life.

Our services include physiotherapy, massage therapy, kinesiology, oncology fitness, dietetics, manual lymphatic drainage, compression therapy, pelvic health physiotherapy, and psychotherapy. Each provider works collaboratively to ensure your care is coordinated, customized, and compassionate. We also offer virtual rehab options so you can access support even when leaving home feels difficult.
