Compression Therapy
Compression therapy is a key part of effective treatment for lymphedema, lipedema, chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), and other swelling-related conditions. Whether you're managing cancer-related lymphedema, dealing with persistent lower limb swelling, or looking for support after surgery, our team is here to help you navigate your compression needs.
At Ottawa Cancer and Lymphatics Centre, we offer comprehensive compression solutions — from multi-layered bandaging and short-stretch wraps to custom-fit daytime and nighttime garments — all tailored to your diagnosis, stage of care, and lifestyle needs.
What Is Compression Therapy?
Compression therapy involves applying controlled pressure to affected areas using specialized bandages or garments. It is a central component of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), which also includes Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), skincare, and prescribed exercise. CDT is delivered in two distinct phases:
- Intensive Phase: Frequent, skilled compression bandaging with multilayer wraps is used to reduce swelling and limb volume. This phase is typically initiated after diagnosis or during a flare-up.
- Maintenance Phase: Once swelling is reduced, long-term control is achieved using custom-fit day and night-time compression garments, such as sleeves, stockings, gloves, or vests.
At the Ottawa Cancer & Lymphatics Centre, our certified lymphedema therapists guide you through each phase, ensuring your compression plan is safe, effective, and personalized.
Compression garments may include arm sleeves and gloves, stockings or pantyhose, bras and vests, trunk or abdominal garments or custom hybrid solutions for complex cases.
Ontario’s Assistive Devices Program (ADP)
We are proud to be authorizers for Ontario’s Assistive Devices Program (ADP). This provincial program provides financial support for individuals requiring medical compression garments for lymphedema. Eligible patients may receive up to 75% coverage of the cost of their prescribed compression garments.
Our trained staff will guide you through the application process, assist with required documentation, and ensure your garments are properly prescribed and meet ADP criteria. This program significantly reduces financial barriers and ensures consistent access to essential compression therapy.
Conditions Treated with Compression Therapy
Lymphedema: Lymphedema is the buildup of lymph fluid that causes swelling in the arms, legs, chest, or trunk. It may be primary (genetic) or secondary (acquired after cancer treatments like radiation or lymph node removal). While incurable, it can be managed effectively with ongoing treatment, including compression therapy.
Lipedema: Lipedema is a progressive fat and fluid disorder that primarily affects women. It causes disproportionate fat accumulation, pain, and swelling in the legs and arms. Lipedema cannot be managed with diet or exercise alone, but compression can significantly reduce discomfort, improve mobility, and help prevent the development of lipo-lymphedema, a combined presentation of both conditions.
Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI): CVI occurs when the veins in the legs struggle to return blood to the heart, resulting in swelling, varicose veins, or leg ulcers. Compression garments are essential for improving venous return, reducing fluid buildup, and managing symptoms.
At Ottawa Cancer & Lymphatics Centre, our team of certified lymphedema therapists and compression fitters are highly trained to assess, prescribe, and fit compression garments and systems tailored to your needs. Whether you’re newly diagnosed, managing a chronic condition, or recovering from surgery, we will support you every step of the way with evidence-based, compassionate care.
